chanel smokey blue bag

In my previous post, I talked about my star buy shoes of this year.  If you ask me what was my star buy BAG of last year, it would definitely be my smokey blue Chanel bag.

I only have two Chanel bags and one is black classic version which was passed on from my mother.  And this one right here.  I love small bags that is functional and this piece would not dissapoint you.

I carry very little things that would be my wallet, iPhone, lip gloss and my house key.  And nothing else.  Even on a 10 hour flight, I think i would only add my glasses and passport to that list.  No big luggage on the flight.

So when I saw this piece at the store, a little pochette that turns into a purse which has coin case and a card holder inside, I knew it would be a keeper.  But so many color selections.

I would normally go for the Black, Beige, Grey kinda basic color.  I would have never thought of getting this color but hold on.
I will be in a hot summer Singapore and already have black Chanel bag.  Shouldn’t I get a color that is more playful?  But not too bold as I wouldn’t want the bag to stand out too much.

So I decided to get this smokey blue color which has a tint of grey.  Very neutral blue.  Not a hard-core blue.

It matches well with my basic style items as the tint of grey complements my clothes.

What was your star buy bag of last year?   Probably for this year, my Celine trio bag is at the top of the list!

up to date with topshop slip-ons

What do you do, when you have all the clothes but it doesn’t seem to be up to date and in trend…

I wear my Topshop black slip-ons more often and I must say that these have been my star buy of this year so far in the ‘shoes’ department.  It was a bit unconfortable at first, probably because of the shape but they are brilliant now.

I am usually 24.5cm but for this one, I got a half size larger which was 39 EUR size.

They can go with practically anything I wear, casual or non-casual and also bring pretty much up to date with what I am wearing.  I love to wear them with a black or grey skirt, but they go great with jeans and pants as well.

The one from Topshop was about 30$SGD so very affordable piece to buy, and a convenient way to update your style.

Here are some ways to wear these slip-ons.  My favorite one is the first one with black skirt.

I am just wearing some super basic items such as Black skirt, stripe Ts, white denim, grey denim… etc which all of you may already have.  And with these basic items, you can bring the style in trend and up to date with just this slip-ons.  An awesome piece to add to your wardrobe.  And you won’t regret it as it doesn’t cost so much.

What is your star buy so far for this year?

when casual meets birkin

Hi everyone!   Last weekend was exhausting but fun as I had couple of friends over at my house to watch the World Cup games.

Sleepless nights but it was a good game.  Finally soon to be over, which team will win?

Last year at this time, I was rushing to pack my things within two weeks as I was relocating from Hong Kong (was very sad to leave) to Singapore.  This was the 4th relocation in 6 1/2 years so packing was an easy thing for me.  Plus I was always down sizing my closet everytime I moved so less things to pack each time.

One thing I learned was – always keep the best basic items.  I’m posting some of my selective basic items that does great combiations for all styling.

– White denim :: Cigarette denim from AG Jeans.  These are the most awesome white denim.  Great structure and allows a little stretch.
– Grey jersy Ts :: COS.  Loose Ts with great texture.  It has a jersy feel which makes it look classy.
– A good old bag that would last forever :: Hermes Birkin.  Just takes the casual look to another level.

defining your own style

Hi everyone!  Today is a public holiday in Singapore but I may have to work on an assignment… Oh well.

Yesterday I posted a picture on my Instagram commenting about ‘Defining your own style’.  For me it was back to basics.  All these years of exploring what my style was, that was where I ended up.  It was very simple.

Back to basics.

Quality over Quantity.

Like the picture below, a simple white shirt, ripped jeans and a tint of grey or nude item was just perfect for me. Those were the things I felt so comfortable in.  Also, I choose quality over quantity.  So I have very limited number of clothes but I’m happy with that because I know that my simple white T-shirt has the perfect structure, texture and cutting that fits just perfectly. And I know which brand to go to for a white T (after all the experiment with other brands).  Mine are James Perse and Three Dots.  Prior for casual loose look and later for office wear Ts.

So when it comes down to jeans, there is only two of my favorite brands.  Jeans after jeans I tried out, some didn’t work at all after buying them. And when I was in my teens, I used to like really baggy jeans. Ugh. Now I only wear straight cut because that is what I feel most comfortable in. I tried boyfriend denim, but I think my body shape wasn’t for that (probably not enough length of legs haha).

Over the years I had quite a few times of ‘closet restructuring’.  Now at my age, I come to think I want to have a simple quality lifestyle.  I wanted to keep my closet simple as possible with a ‘fixed capacity’.  That was the key.  If I go a little bit over capacity, I would try to give some items away for charity or give it to anyone who wants them, to make up for that space.  Never keep adding on my closet capacity.

It was hard at first. Clinging on to things that I haven’t worn for more than 2 years.  Just emotionally attached to these stuff.  But I asked myself. Is it what you truly value?  Do you really need that in your space?  Not really.  So this is how I started to restructure.  I think it took about three years.  Then out came to the horizon,, the things that I truly value.  That was when I was able to define my own style.

When it comes down to bags… I don’t know how many times I paid for ‘education’.  Meaning, I rushed into buying them, but in the end I realized I only bought it just because it was a trendy bag or I thought I had to have it but I really didn’t.  My well learned lesson of ‘education fund’ in several bags.  I probably had dozens and dozens of bags.  Now, I am only down to maybe ten.

The Hermes bags.  I have three and I think I’m going to keep it that way.  I do have a fixed budget.  I can’t afford so many.  So when I bought these I really carefully thought what color, size and style I wanted.   I love small bags because I only hold five things in my bag.

Wallet. iPhone. House key. Lipgloss.  Handkerchief (haha. this is so Japanese of me).   Nothing more than this.

And I actually use the black Garden Party bag the most.  This is also my plane ride bag.

Defining my own style doesn’t limit to fashion but other things like kitchenware to household goods.

Like, towels for example.  I love towels and a good quality towel makes me feel good.  I discovered a Japanese towel brand called “imabari towel“.  Its well known in Japan,  have a history well over a century and quite affordable.  The texture, touch and quality is so unbelievable.  No other manufacture can imitate the master craftsmanship of this towel.  Various crafts work from material selection,  weaving, and dyeing put in to the process, the quality standard is amazing.  From my recent trip back to Tokyo, I bought 5 of these  handkerchief.

So, how do you define your style?

favorite ripped jeans

Hi everyone!

I am finally back from Tokyo and can’t believe its been nearly 3 weeks since my last post. Apologies for that. I think I have been too occupied with Instagram posts.  And also I ended up extending my stay in Tokyo for another week so my 7 days stay turned out to be a two week.

The moment I came back it was Easter and the weekend was crazy with parties and gatherings.  But finally back to normal and I kinda like it!

So, before I start posting my Tokyo trip favorite eating and shopping go to places… I wanted to share my recent addiction.  Ripped jeans.

So many years of searching for the right pair of jeans and few mistaken investments here and there. Finally came across the right one.

AG jeans.

All of  their cuts and styles fits perfect for me. Slim cut below the knees and well structured around the hip zone. Amazing. I couldn’t find the right cut because I have big hips but below my knees I like to keep it look slim.

So many different styles and looks you can create with the pair. Here’s some of the looks taken from my Instagram account (@simplytokyo) .  A few other more but posting my favorite basic simple casual looks.

What’s your favorite jeans brand?

playing with scarves

Hi everyone!

For those in Europe or US, you may be enjoying the spring weather where it is a bit cool and warm.  I love spring and I miss it so much. Especially going for walks during the Sakura season in Tokyo.

So my husband and I decided to do a week trip back to my hometown Tokyo and we are flying out this weekend! So excited and cannot believe it will be the first time in 3 years that we will both be in Tokyo together.

It was always one of us in Tokyo for business trip so this would be fun.

When it was Spring or Winter I always took out my scarves and played with it to enjoy the season.

However here in Singapore its so hot to wear it around your neck so decided to take out and utilize a few of my Hermes scarves for my arm or bags.

It is really fun to add in a little twist and color to your simple look.  And makes a huge difference (I think) to the whole style.  It also adds a chic and classic look. What do you think?

yellow brick road

Hi everyone!  Hope you are all having a great weekend.

Singapore is currently in the dry phase of the monsoon season and the haze has been returning which makes it even worse.

However last weekend was still mild and a great weather and I had a wedding to attend to at the beautiful resort hotel Capella Hotel.

I have stayed here once for a short weekend getaway.  The resort is very calming and quiet, very luxurious. Um, okay and on the expensive side but it was worth it.

So back to the wedding. Since it was a lunch wedding I decided to wear my favorite yellow dress.  For sandals I wore Giuseppe Zanotti. I have kept this sandals for years because I met him back in 2006 and it was specially designed for me by Mr Zanotti himself. So honored!

Then at the hotel lounge I came across a beautiful painting I instantly fell in love with. Also matching my dress haha.

Don’t you love it when you find beautiful paintings?
